ctfarmer The clutch pedal is mushy and It will not engage. Like I said earlier it was fine one day and the next-no clutch. tia Steve B.

On my Case it to was going along fine one day. The next day it would not hardly move. Had to brake tractor down and the clutch , pressure plate and throw outbearing was replace. Plus needed to turn down the flywheel. Yours sounds like what mine did. For all the above I think the cost for parts was like 215.00 ... Got new rebuilt clutch and pressure plate from a rebuilder of tranny parts and the throw outbearing was did there to.

Stephen, please clarify. You say "the clutch pedal is mushy and It will not engage". Do you mean that the clutch does not engage to drive the tractor OR depressing the clutch pedal does not disengage the clutch to stop the tractor?

Whatever happened did so imeadiately. One day worked fine next day no clutch engagement.Pedal is mushy,if tractor is running you cannot put it in gear. A friend thought I had broken part of the clutch fork off. I thought I had better check here first. Someone here has been through this before. Thanks a million for the quick replies. Steve

Joe in Washington. Where are you located? I am south of Tacoma at base of Mt. Raineer. I am originally from NW Pa. but moved here over 20 years ago. Steve B.

Hi Steven, I live near Quilcene, originally from Clearfield Co, PA. Haven't been back there since 1978.

There are several things that will cause the clutch disc to not release when the clutch pedal is depressed, all that I know of will require splitting the tractor to repair except #1. Here are a couple of things to check before splitting.

1. Clutch plate rusts to flywheel. This is common in our wet weather. I have 3 Case tractors, can expect to have at least one them like that every spring. Not likely to happen in a few days though and I don't remember the clutch pedal ever being mushy when it happens.

2. The end of the clutch actuator linkage rod can break off or wear and pull through the fork socket or the fork pivot can break. That will cause the clutch pedal to be mushy since the fork is not pushing the throwout bearing into the pressure plate and the only resistance to depressing the clutch pedal is that big return spring under the foot board that is attached to the pedal.

Here is a pix from recent clutch work on my 310. The fork and actuator rod are near identical and function the same as VA series but are not interchangeable. To check the pedal linkage rod, follow the rod back from the bell housing to the first disconnect point. Uncouple the linkage and see if you can pull the rod out of the bell housing. I don't think it will come through the hole if the end is not broken off but look in there, if you can see the back of the rod taper end it has worn through the fork socket.

Thanks a milion for the info Joe. That worn rod is most likely what my problem is. I am basing this on how the pedal feels and the machine itself. I have had it over 15 years with no trouble,I guess I can't complain. Will let you know how it works out. Thanks again for the info Steve B.
