CASE W14 Loader engines

All,

Looking at buying a W14 loader W Grapple. Been doing my homework on it. The early ones used a 336 Cu case diesel engine similar to the 870 case? If that is the case, was that engine enough HP to run that loader? Also, was it as fuel efficient in that rig as it was the 870? I see the later ones used a 6 cylinder Cummins at around 100 HP? How was the transmissions on the early ones? Thanks in advance.---adam

put thousands of hours on a W-14 with the 336,, thats a 90-100 HP engine at the flywheel like they are rating the CDC engine ,, and yes it does Very well in the loaders, we also sold them new, transmissions are fine,, they are a two speed allison unit,, very durable unless you are being stupid on shifting under power fwd/rev I never seen much power change between the CDC engine and the 336, there alsowas a high altitude kit that turbo'ed them,, really Snotty then

I have one with the 336. Works just fine. I would not trade it for a skid steer worth 10 times as much. Dug a hole and buried a
junk pile last week. Must have dug out 750 yards, and covered after moving the junk in. When something gets stuck the W14 is my go
to. It will outpull my 2394. The Cummins in the W14 was the BT4. 336 will likely be a small journal engine. Nothing wrong with
either. It is not like a gear driven unit. All you need is enough power to spin the torque converter fast enough to make the
wheels spin. Gobs of HP would make little difference.
