Case - what is it?

Yet another tractor I'm trying to identify at the museum.

The serial number plate is missing from this tractor. I believe it to be some flavor of a Case Model V. Can anyone tell me more specifically what model it is, and approximate the year? If pictures of castings or other parts will help, I can get those.

Some aspects make me think VA, others make me think VAC. When did they start putting the engine mounted hydraulic pump on them. Does it have an eagle hitch? The front axle makes me think VA, the engine mounted hydraulic pump makes me think VAC.

I also wonder if the front axle was changed at some point. It kind of looks to me like the sheet metal cut for the chicken roost steering bar is there under the radiator on the left side, hard to tell though from these pictures.

You need to back up a bit and get the entire tractor in one photo. One from each side and front and rear.

A very small part of 17 acres of mostly outdoor displays. And to stay on topic, the last photo has Case tractors in it.

I'll see what I can do to get more & better pictures. Sometimes, depending upon what is parked next to the item and how close it is, I can't get far enough back to take an ideal photo. It's also completely possible that pieces and parts have been interchanged so it could be part one model and part another. I ran into that when I asked for help over on the McCormick-Deering forum.

Better pictures attached if this would help with identifying model & year of this Case. I was lucky - two of the tractors that used to be next to this one have been moved. I have a donation record for a VAI that I can't identify. I was hoping this might be it, but maybe not. Of course, one cannot completely trust the donation records because the donor may think grandpa's tractor was a 1946 Case VAI, but it wasn't really.

I'm not an expert but I had seen a similar Case like this with that style of 3 point. It was a VAC. I'll have to look thru my old photos of the estate that had it 5 years ago.

I'm thinking VAI now with the updated pictures. At first I was thinking VAC where someone had swapped it to a VAI front end. It has the engine mounted hydraulic pump and eagle hitch which date it to 1949 or later. I'm mainly thinking VAI instead of VAC because of the lack of cultivator mounting points under the radiator. It does have the cutout for the chicken roost steering arm under the radiator, so the jury is still out on a swapped front end or swapped grill parts.

It's a nice looking unit, it would be well worth restoring. Does it run?

I disagree on Vai. If it was it would have different rear wheel castings and a different gear pattern and the head lights would be on the grill and it would have a seat back rest as well as 6 bolt front rims. I still say VA

I have no idea if it runs, nor do I know enough to even be able to find out. I leave that to other people. It could have come to us in this condition, or it could have been restored here. I have no way to know without more clues. I do know that serial number plates get removed during restorations and aren't always put back. Hence, a missing plate is in itself a clue. My task is to make sense out of 45 years of records which occasionally are very, very good, most of the time are functionally adequate, and other times are sorely lacking. My forte is making sense out of chaos. Like used red MN said, I've babbled on about the museum and restorations in other threads if anyone is interested.

Your tractor was built from 1949 (introduction of the Eagle Hitch) to mid 1951 when the steering design was significantly updated. IMHO the front axle was changed to a wide front from a narrow front sometime along the way. I have a similar conversion. If so, the missing serial number plate would say VAC followed by 7 numbers, the first possible two numbers being 53 and the last possible first two numbers being 55. In those years you took the first two serial numbers and subtract 4 from them to arrive at the model year of manufacture. This may be a little confusing.

Also to change it to that front end the steering gearing would have to be replaced or else you would have to turn the wheel left to go right. I think looking at the paint the grill and hood are off a different tractor

Should be a Serial number just a bit higher than the air filter. It would be onthe flamge of the engine or trans where its bolted together.

I have looked for a SN on the flange, not only on this VA, but all the others we have, and I can see nothing. Today, I did my best to look as high as possible behind the air filter and still saw nothing.

I have found flange SN on a model S, and a Model 801-B and they are about mid-way up the "curve".

The VA would have short rear axles. I go for vac with front end and steering sector changed out of turning the steering wheel to the right turns the tractor to the right..
