Hello, this is my first “newer” tractor. It is 1995 model. My tractors have been from 60’s and 70’s. Everything was working fine until the other day. We used it the day before pulling a trailer. It did fine. On this particular morning though, on start up something wasn’t sounding right with the hydraulics and the hoses were jumping and which made it be jerky when trying to use. Plus, check trans light was on. I changed hydraulic filter and fluid. Put Hytran back in of course. Still same issue. I did however notice when I turn key just enough to the turn right to cause the trans light to go out the hydraulics smoothed out while holding key in that position. Tractor won’t move while holding key which I assume is because I stopped the power to transmission. Which leads me to believe it’s a sensor. All gears work fine just jumpy when check trans light is on. Sorry for long post. Just wanted all the details.

Just throwing out ideas, jumpy/jerky hydraulics usually means pump is being starved for oil. So oil level is low or something is preventing proper flow of oil to pump. I can’t find it in the parts catalog but most hydraulic systems have a suction screen for the pump. I would call a dealer and find out if this tractor has one a check it to see if it is clean. It might be that it relies on a filter to do this but that would be odd, very difficult to re-prime the suction of a pump through a dry filter that was just screwed on. You said you pulled a trailer with it was this some distance on the road? My thinking is there was built up brake or clutch lining in the housing and when you run it down the road with the gears churning at a higher speed that got stirred up and moved into the suction screen, now the colder thicker oil doesn’t flow through the restrictions on the screen. My guess is that turning the key into that position electrically disables the hydraulics from building pressure so the hydraulics sound smooth.
Fact or fiction YMMV!
