Cast wheels moving

Got my cast wheels on my A moved and set. Plowed then took the hub off painted my wheels and set them again. Took the tractor to another plow spot about three miles or so away and on the way over the right wheel walked out on the axle a few inches. What is the best way to set them things without having them move. I had light oil on the axle under the wheel and never sieze on the hub and plow coat on the exposed axle . The oil I cleaned off and the sieze I wiped most off then put the bolts to 400 ftlbs. Did I do right by getting the axle dry and the bolts real tight or am I missing something. Maybe I just didnt have them tight enough to begin with.

It sounds as though you did everything right with the exception of getting the wheel tight enough. It is helpful to tighten the wheel and then check and tighten it some more after you have driven it a little. Also, if the clamp and/or hub are worn you may have to put a thin shim of some kind between the hub clamp and the hub to help it tighten properly. Hope this helps. Mike

400 ft-lbs sounds excessive to me. It took me 205 to crack the flywheel bolts loose after 60 years on an A. If it walks on the axle it is loose. I always found the 18" box end that came with the tractor to be enough to tighten sufficiently.

I was told never oil or greese the axle,I had to try it and my wheel moved,I cleaned it up and tightened them up several times over a week or so and no problem

Wrap the taper of the hub with wax paper per the owners manual. This takes up space to help the clamp get tighter and also aids in removal. Don't try to tighten the bolts all in one sitting. Tighten drive retighten etc. they will seat in.

Some of those clamps get streched and bottom out before they get tight. I have seen several with shim stock stuck in them too.
