Cat 416 backhoe

I believe the brakes on my 416 need to be replaced. The question is; is it something that would require special tools and skill to do. They are the wet brake system. One side makes a groaning sound when stopping. Thank you, Dave

Nothing too special. You need a means to handle the axle housing which weighs several hundred pounds. I use the forks on a skid loader usually... strap it to that securely and pull straight out about 6". I've also used an engine cherry picker on some tractors. Beyond that... the brake parts can be removed from inside the housing with basic hand tools. If you decide to remove the outer axle shaft... that will require a bearing separator to remove the outer bearing and a 3/4 drive torque wrench to reinstall the axle retaining bolt to torque. Otherwise... it's just bull work.
