///// category 1 versus category 2 /////

Hi

I was looking to buy a self-contained backhoe for my tractor but unfortunately it seems to be a cat 2 unit and my international 384 has cat 1 holes on the lift arms ...

It's only off by about an eighth of an inch or so or maybe a smidge more but is difficult to change over or is that not recommended?

The backhoe is a kelley unit with unknown model number.

Thanks

Start with figuring out if your tractor can carry the weight of the backhoe. And 3pt backhoes are hard on the tractor linkage. So you really don’t want an under size tractor trying to hold too much hoe.

That said, if the pins are held onto the backhoe with a nut, they are easily changed. They can even be changed to combination pins that work with both Cat 1 and 2. Most dealers will have generic 3 pt pins. A&I also has a large selection that can be ordered through any Deere dealer.

HI,

My tractor is an international 384 ... I think it is about 40 HP ... I have not seen the backhoe unit so I don't know how the pins for mounting are attached .... interesting to know about possibly being able to simply change out the pins if bolted on ... alot easier than drilling out he holes on the ends!...

What to do it they are welded on ? maybe grind the pins a bit ?

I was told the backhoe unit is a kelly (kelley?) but no model number per the owner so unsure of the weight of the unit ....

I believe that tractor is too small for a backhoe-the first clue being the backhoe is category 2 and the tractor is category 1. As others stated, that backhoe is very hard on the 3-point linkage. Mark.

If it's CAT 1, it's way undersized for the backhoe. Most CAT 1 backhoes are too much for the compact tractors, too. That's why the newer units have sub-frame assemblies to go with the 3PT backhoe unit. They tend to break in the middle without them.

I have an ARPS 730 CAT 2 3PT backhoe that goes on my Farmall 806. That's a 100 HP tractor & about the perfect size for the job.
