caterpillar diesel question

I know its not a farmall but i dont know where to turn and you guys know everything about everything. Ive got a 955H trackscavator. it runs real good but suddenly it developed a miss under load. It runs smooth until it is working then it suddenly starts to miss like its fouling an injector. the only thing that happened was i ran it low on fuel. i drained the main filter and there was water and sludgey stuff in it. when it is idling i cracked the lines loose from the pump and each time it started to miss from that cylinder. Im just wondering if i sucked somthing thru the pump and its partially plgging an injector nozzle. any input would be great. thanks.

for one thing did you replace the fuel filters.you say you drained water and sludge from it, that tells you you need the filter replaced.fuel cant flow through a plugged filter, espesially under load. when you crack a line at the injectors or pump that is normal for it to miss, because it is not sending the pressurized fuel to the injector to vaporize it in the cyl.no you didnt suck something into the injector because they operate on pressure not vacuum.once the filter is plugged its plugged. so change your filters, bleed it and go to work.

Yep - it's the filter and/or air in the line.

You won't plug the injector if the filter is in place. But if you have that stuff in the tank, I would get the fuel down in it and park it on a slope to get the outlet lowest and flush the tank.

When our rental equipment would have diesel fuel problems in the sweet potato fields, the local farmers used a John Deere fuel conditioner that worked wonders. (This was on a JCB rough terrain forklift with a perkins diesel)

This was the ONLY fuel conditioner that seemed to work.

I'll chime in and say you've probably got low fuel pressure, most likely caused by plugged filters. Change them and see what you've got. Sam
