CC Case Water Pump

I went thru the process of fixing the leaky pump on my C Case.

It was hard to get off. To not break the casting,I used small cheap screwdrivers as wedges and drove the wedges into the thick gasket away from the ears where the three bolts go. I believe I used six wedges.

I sent it to Thebald in Iowa to get it rebuilt but it still leaked so I then took it apart myself.

Unlike the D series, there is not a replaceable seal assembly in the C series pump. All assemblies that I am aware of have a spring encapsulated within the assembly to hold the two seal faces in contact.

The C series uses a flanged bronze bearing at the rear of the casting for the stationary part of the seal. The rotary part is a thrust bearing surface--- part of the impeller and shaft---- cast iron I think--- that contacts the bronze flange.

The spring contacting force is provided by a spring pushing forward on the outer race of the ball bearing at the front of the shaft. Thebald had left the spring out. It had probably completely rusted away. I improvised a spring that pushed with a light force--- I machined a Belleville spring pair. The fan pulls forward with a light force so my "rebuilt" pump did not leak when running but only leaked when stopped.

From my learning experience, it may be that your ball bearing's outer race is "froze" into the casting---rust and crud--- and therefore no longer exerts a contact force at the seal faces. Maybe your spring also has rusted away.

The ball bearing is standard. I expect the spring is NA. Consider wave springs tailored to the ball bearing's dimensions. The seal surfaces might still be good. The bronze bearing has little to no side load on it because the ball bearing is directly under the fan belt.

Clear as mud???????
