CDL Drug testing

A few days ago there was a discussion on here or the Tales board about the new CDL drug test clearing house.
Our safety department issued this letter to the drivers to inform us of this.
I will post a copy of the letter with our company name blacked out.
With over 7500 drivers and 500 million miles a year I trust our safety department to be current on any and all DOT rules.
I hope this letter might answer any questions you might have on this subject.

Sounds like a good idea for anyone running trucks.

I've talked to several guys lately that were looking for drivers. They all told me the typical response to telling a potential new hire that they needed a drug test was, 'I need a few weeks to clear my system first'

Needless to say, those guys didn't get hired.

That's truly sad, and entirely believable. People are all screwed up these days.

I have no problem with doing this. On a similar note, does any company do random drug tests anymore? Or is that an invasion of privacy or discrimination? My employer for sure does, you never know when or who will get called in off the job to take one. We have 3 hours to get there and have filled the cup up. Usually around 8-10 of us any time they do it 2-4 times a year through a private company. Even the management don't know when they're coming to test us. Only reason I bring this up is because of how many people I know of that smoke weed constantly and never have a any reason to worry about their job. Let's be clear though, that's not my cup of tea anyway.

Rboots, having been the owner of a trucking company for 25 years I don't see how it is possible for anybody to get around drug testing. That is not to say that in a larger company a druggie can't get passed over for many many rounds of tests.

John, I got rid of my CDL 13 years ago so no longer affects me but I would like to read it. It is comming through so small it is not readable on both classic that I normally use or modern. So my question is could you put it on as a clickable link that could be full size of the paper?

On my last job. I drove a standard Dodge 3500 with a tool bed. We had to take a CDL drug test. But we didn't need a CDL license to drive. And since me and Paul didn't do drugs. We were the ones they sent down to take the test. The two we knew were taking drugs. Never had a test. I guess being the golden boys of the shop helped.

I usually save things (photos) like this to my computer desktop. They can then be opened and enlarged for viewing, delete it after if you don't want to keep it. Works for a lot of them.

On a Windoze machine just hold the Alt key while you press + key as many times as needed - each press of the + makes the content of the screen bigger.

Mine is different, hold Ctrl then press + or - to zoom in or out.

Holding Ctrl and 0 restores screen to 100%

Thank you for posting this. Another change for people with a CDL to get used to. I remember when I had to convert my NY class1-2 license to a CDL in early 1990?s and the random drug test came in around that time. I am actually surprised it?s taken this long to have a database of the drug test information.

I was thinking the same thing until I read the line that said "DUI's received in a passenger car will not be reported to the clearinghouse". I know the guy who killed those motorcyclists had multiple DUI's but I don't know if he got them while operating a commercial vehicle.

I had a Class 1 in the 80's then converted over to CDL A when that came about in '92. I've never had to take a drug test mandated by NYS or any company I drove for all those years ago. I would assume at the current time and for many years prior, there is a requirement for companies to drug test for pre-employment screening and or randomly. Is that a FMSCA, state DOT requirement ?
How does this work currently. Who or what is the presiding authority that requires this? I do not drive much but still have the CDL A with current DOT physical, there is no drug testing required at the DOT physical examination time, they do test urine for sugar I believe, diabetes I think is the concern, forget now.

My sister has small HVAC business. She got letter from her Insurnce company informing her an employee will no longer be covered, too many DUI.

I Would think insurance companies would like to know about CDL drug test results and DUIs while driving personal and commercil vehicles.

Has anyone lost their job because insurnance company wouldn't cover them?

FMSCA regulates drug testing of CDL drivers pilots train engineers and I believe pipe line workers.
