Chain saw rakers

Has anyone ever used a chain with this kind of rakers? I have sharpened it a few times and I kind of sense that the rakers should be lowered. I have never seen a gauge that would fit over rakers like this. Thanks in advance!

Hello Russ from MN,

Use you depth gauge like any others chain. I have one just like it, and I like mine @.025.to .030 It may be too much if yoy have not used a full chisel chain though. Try .015 to.020,

Guido.

Hoo Russ,

Yep the do look different. Full cut chisel chain I think. Mine sure makes big chips,

Stihl chain.

If you don't want to cut those rakers yourself, take it to a small engine shop and let them cut them on the grinder. They do seem harder than regular Oregon rakers.

In our shop we have a grinder set up and dedicated to grinding rakers to the CORRECT height. (Usually the CORRECT height is a lot higher than most people think. On the old saws that were set up to lug and still live you could grind them off if you wanted to. But on the new high revving saws, that's a sure way to ruin a piston and cylinder. )

I owned a Husqvarna dealership when they came out with those. They didn't sell very well. Just grind them down like any raker.

This chain is on a 621 Jonsered, about 44 years old! Cut very well all day Monday until I hit something in a big Scots pine, 30 inches in dia.

that is chain that is used in saws that have a chain sharpener built into them. They are curved like that so the grinder wheel inside the chain cover can come down when you press on the special handle & sharpen the chain. Mainly used on MacCullough saws of medium size. Wasn't a very good system & wasn't around very long. Had a habit of staying down too long & grinding chain down to nothing in no time. Self sharping saws were built for amateurs.

Just use a straight edge and a feeler gauge since a raker gauge won't fit. I have done many chains like that. .030" is how I set most of mine except my small climbing saw I keep at .025"

Hello 2x4,

No not the auto sharpening chain. Here is the one,

Guido.

Hello JDEM,

A straight edge works just as good as a depth gauge. I have chains like that, and my regular depth gauge works just fine also. I keep mine at .025 to .030 as well..................

You can buy a curved stone that fits on the end and will sharpen a chain like that. I have a icraftsman with the power sharpening stone. It is the greatest invention ever. Keeps the chain so sharp that just the weight of the saw is all that is needed. My stone is almost gone and sears don't make the stone anymore so I'm going to buy one of those stones that fits one the end. Why anyone would spend time sharpening a chain when you can have a razor sharp chain in 2 seconds. I can't understand why people didn't like that system and they don't make them anymore.

Was talking to a guy at the tool rental store. They were bored and filled off the rakers on big saw; 36" bar, probably a 7 ci engine.

Got the saw started and just barely touched the chain to a 2' diameter log they had to test the saws and chains on. That thing just self fed and was thru the log in about 5 seconds.

That did a pretty good job of scaring him and they chucked that chain.....lots of big chips tho. Not the saw dust you get most of the time....
