Changing lawn mower tire

I finished mowing just before the rain last evening, pulled into the shed to clean out under the deck and noticed a front tire was almost flat. I took the wheel off and took the old rotted tire off and fixed the tube and mounted the new tire. This is the jig I made for small tires.

I made one similar but simpler. Mine won't hold rim from rotating but I use small tire irons to work mine off. You must wind tire off rim with special tool like manual tire changers from 70 years ago.

So far the mini tire changer rig that Harbor Freight sells has worked pretty well for me. I found clamped in my bench vise made it a bit above comfortable work height so the last time I used it I C clamped it to my brush hog on the tractor and that worked well.

Too big of a vise. I was coming home from Muscatine
around 11:00 & ran into rain so heavy I thought about
pulling off of 38. Had .32" in the gauge when I got
home.

Tractor rears are easier to work on than the mower
size tires. Great idea on the holding fixture.

No rain here yesterday. I agree, bigger is easier.

I should let you practice on a crazy wheel off of my ztr 😀 I am sure it has a thorn in it and it is going to get a plug.

You have a nice shop. The only thing wrong is
there is room to walk in & work on stuff.
I might bring some stuff over some time.

I used that Harbor Freight mini tire changer when I had to replace a tire on a rototiller. I mounted the unit to a piece of 2" X 8" then clamped it to the tail gate of an old Toyota truck. Not the easiest thing in the world to use but it did work.

Vise holds it. U slips over vise and jaws clamp onto bolt flats. Made from bits in a hurry one day.

If you do, I'll send some stuff home with, we'll trade. I've said for years that I need to have someone clean out my shop and I'll clean out his and we both throw away what we think is junk.

We installed radial ATV tires on our lawn tractor . Much pleased with the improved traction . Also added washer fluid for ballast .
