Char Lynn Power Steering Question

I am not familiar with power steering units at all but we have a Super M that has a Char Lynn unit on it that works but the pump leaks and needs some work. The tractor has an IH live hydraulic pump on it and we were wondering if you can power the steering motor from the live hydraulic pump? This will be used for tractor rides only and has no need for any other hydraulic output. Can the power steering be ran straight from the live hydraulic pump in this case or is a priority valve or other device needed to control the pressure/flow? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

yes it will work with the live pump i'm pretty sure it wont need a priority valve unless your using other hydraulic outputs

A priority valve is recommended!

Reason: The Charlynn torque motor uses only about 2 gallons per minute. But the live pump will deliver 12 gpm at governed RPM. If supplied direct from the live pump I doubt the Charlynn handle 12 gpm without overpressurizing the system. This risks blowing the Charlyn motor seals and overheating the hydraulic system.....not to mention putting a constant load on the engine.

Spend the money and install a priority valve!!

thanks for the correction now I have a question if he has no need for any other hydraulics would you just dump back in the tank from the priority valve?

Yes indeed! Pipe the valve's NON-priority (aka "implement") outlet directly back to the reservoir.

Char-Lynn did make flow dividers for tractors with live hydraulics which would be the best way to hook up the pwr steering. I don't know if they are available anymore but you might be able too get one from a salvage yard.
