Charging Issue DISCOVERED!

Hi All,

Thanks for all your tips in helping me figure out
my charging issue...I noticed the problem is my
generator cut out relay. I bypassed it with a
wire from the gen to the ammeter and saw a +3
reading at 1/3 throttle.

I'm going to take the cut out relay off and clean
it up and get a better look. I will order a new
one. But am wondering for the time being until
the new one comes can I just wire the generator
straight to the ammeter if i remember every-time
to disconnect the wire until my new cut out relay
comes? Technically the cutoff just makes the
connection when the tractor is running anyways
right?

Please let me know your thoughts...

Dear Ptg
You should not have to use that much wire. You could just use about 8 inches of wire to wire across the cutout. It only has 2 terminals on it. Yes you can do what you are doing. If you want you could also put a toggle switch on your wire for when you shut it off. Some people use a Diode , if you understand how they work. Very glad that you found your trouble. A new cutout is much cheaper than a generator. I have a Fun Projects cutout/voltage regulator on my tractor but I think they cost around $70. A straight cut out should be much cheaper. orget the claims/advertising, just your personal observations of specific gravity, ammeter, voltmeter, boiling over acid, whatever.........do those FP units really REGULATE?

I have had my Fun projects regulator/cutout for around 5 years
now. When I started my tractor yesterday after sitting for about
2 months, ( it was 65 degrees out), it charged at about 10 amps
for just a little bit and then cut back to around 2 amps. By
watching the ammeter, it seems to work like the later models.
My top voltage is around 6.9 running volts. I wish it were a little
higher than that. It does not ever boil the water in the battery.
Yes, I put a charger on it once in a while to bring the battery
voltage up. No matter how high I set the screw on the generator,
it will not charge more than 2 or 3 amps if the battery is up. It
has 2 connections just like a cutout but I think it works by
letting only the current through that the battery needs. It will
not let your battery OVER charge. I am satisfied with the way it
works.

I bought a similar one from Dennis Carpenter. Works just like a regulator. After first starting it will charge at 10 amps - after a few minutes it reads zero. Turn on the lights it drops momentarily to -10 amp and then right back to zero. Turn the lights off and it bumps up to plus 5 or so for a secound and then back to zero.

b.jones & HCOOKE, thanks for the responses. Those have been a curiosity for a couple of years. I have a 3 brush generator belted to an electric motor, but haven't yet been curious enough to plunk down the $60+ to satisfy my curiosity. Maybe I can talk John Regan into a sample or at least a discount in exchange for a few good words if it's performance satisfies me or even return it, since I don't have a Ford with a 3 brush gen to use it on.
