Finally got the problem solved! Tried a new ammeter-no change. So that left only the generator, which I exchanged with one that I knew was working, and that gave me the answer to my problem. A generator repairman open the new generator and discovered grease on the brushs! Cleaned them off real well-unit, used emory cloth on the commutator, reassembled the unit, and now it works.
A note of explanation. When I used the + and - when referring to the ammeter, this was meant to denote either the charging side of the scale or the discharge side. I knew it had nothing to do with polarity. Very poor terminology on my part.
