I have a 1979( I think) ym1601d was using it and noticed my temperature gage was all the way over on hot( but not hot) and gas gage quit working went to start it the next day battery dead I charged battery up started it used it for couple hours turned it off and tried to start it battery dead .I took battery cable off and cleaned put back on no spark fuses not blown but put new ones in .would alternator or regulator cause this or what should I look at thanks

Running hot and battery problem two different items. (Not related). Did it run hot when you ran it for a couple of hours? You need to do some testing with a volt meter. Check your battery voltage before trying to start. Should be 12. 5 or better. Then check your battery voltage after staring. Should be close to 14volts. You will have a better idea how to proceed with that information. If your voltage doesn't change while running then you have a charging problem. You could then check "AC voltage at the dynamo connection right at the dynamo. Just unplug the dynamo and put you test leads in the plug form the dynamo. . It should run from 15ac to close the 30ac depending on speed. If it does then your regulator may be the problem. You can insert the leads either way, doesn't matter.

As far as running hot the tractor was not running hot it's that the temperature gauge when turning key on the temperature gauge needle goes all the way over .and gas in tank is full and it shows empty and quit charging all at same time.i do have a manual oil gauge this all happen at same time thanks

Tractor is not running hot I guess what I mean is the temperature and gas gauge went funky along with not charging battery all at the same time.even lights quit working its like like all electronics quit working at same time thanks

Three possible items to check due to the same time events.
- Take the alternator off and have it tested at the auto parts store.
- Take the voltage regulator and have it tested. Mine shorted out. Got a solid-state replacement, so much better.
- Take starter off and test IF the starter is showing issues, else leave it alone.

On the YTOG are the manuals for free.

I think I found the problem rat nest under the dash found a broken ground wire fixed wire and gauges and lights working as far as charging battery I'll find out in a day or two don't know if that was the cause to all of this but will find out soon thank yall for yalls help and knowledge thanks

oh no. I feel your pain! I had one years ago too. But it was a tiny bird! It ruined my voltage regulator.

Sounds like a ground for your gauges, probably wired in series. Same thing happened on a 385 International I had few years back, gauge showed engine coolant to be hot, fuel gauge was reading inaccurate. End result was the resister on fuel gauge sending unit burned into trying to furnish ground, gauges did not work. Corrected poor ground, temp gauge worked correct, haven't had time to replace fuel gauge sending unit
