charging system question...

hey yall im trying to clean up the wires on my wd45 AND make the generator work. it had a broken brush spring and i fixed that and at one point messing with the wires my tester was showing 7.6 volts but i lost it and cant get it to do anything now... SO the pictures show what im working with, the B on the generator is for "black wire" witch is Field the other lug dont seem to me marked, the regulator starting at the top is Bat Arm Fld now the bat wasnt hooked to anything when i got it, the Arm goes to the unmarked lug on the generator and the Fld goes to the F lug on the generator,

can anybody tell me where to hook up the bat wire and anything else i need to do? i "think" its 6V and right now they have it - ground and its suppose to be a 1954 thanks a bunch

BAT goes to Ammeter. Other side of ammeter to battery which is usually connected at starter solenoid. Light and ignition switches connect to BAT/Ammeter connection

are sure that is a 6 volt generator? looks like a 12 volt to me.

well i dont know for sure, it has a 6V battery so i was thinking it was a 6v gen

BAT on VR to Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter. Other Supply side of ammeter goes to hot ungrounded battery post, often by a connection where the big battery cable attaches to a starter switch or solenoid input

ARM on VR to gennys ARM post

FLD on VR to gennys FLD post

The VR needs a good ground to work

ooks like a Delco-Remy gen to me &amp; visually you can't tell a 6 from a 12. If it has a tag riveted to barrel, then red or black tag color will tell you.

nope no tag that i can see. i think il take it to a alt shop and have them test it thanks

That is a 12V gen. A 6V has the same external diameter the whole length. A 12 has the stepped housing like yours. Clean off all the paint around the posts on the gen so you know what they are. Once you have it all hooked up, be sure to polarize it.

ot so. Look up 1100046 11L7, stepped barrel, 6 volt unit.

why dont you get an altenater one wire they work great
