Charging System

ok, got my TE20 back to a six volt system. starts better, runs better, im very happy. Trying to decide whether to use a generator, which will need re-building and a regulator, or buying a 6 volt positive ground alternator. The shop i take my electrical stuff to says they are the same price, but the alternator will be self regulating, and only requires a single wire to the battery. Mostly use the tractor to bushhog and plow snow.
Thoughts??

When you changed to an Alternator you probably changed to Negative Ground, BUT did you also change the Coil feed from the Ignition switch to Positive terminal (that is the opposite way to how it normally is on 6 volt) and you should also open the points to .025" as well, to give a little more time for the Condenser to re-charge If you haven't already done this, move the Ground lead from the battery to one of the bolts close to the Starter. We have a lot that use a single wire Alternator without problems. The 6 volt system MUST have all the terminals clean and bright and tight, so they make a good contact and the Ground from the battery moved to close to the Starter, this helps them to start more easily, you can't neglect them or they will give problems starting...John(UK)[email protected]

When i put the 6 volt battery in i did change the coil feed but i will check the points this weekend.. it starts and runs reasonably well considering it should be getting a full engine rebuild, but its going to be next year. i have moved the positive cable to one of the starter bolts when i had my starter off. The starter is what started this entire repair, it quit working and needed a rebuild.

Something I forgot to say earlier was that the Ground lead (and the main feed as well) should be Gage 0, not the thin battery cable that is used on a 12 volt system. The thick cable is necessary to carry the high amperage used on the 6v Starter.John(K)[email protected]
