I am having trouble trying to check the points an cond on my 1952 sc.It has a fairbanks morse mag.How do i get to the points This is all new to me fellows.I removed the four screws thinking it would come apart. It opened up a little but i didn,t want to force it.tractor is getting gas.Turns over real good.Ran fine last fall.I was thinking that the points may need cleaning,if i can get to them.I don,t want to do the wrong thing. Like i said this is all new to me.I hope you can help me out. Thank you.

I would check if I have good spark from the mag wires before tearing it apart.

If no spark, look on the side of the mag for the number of the mag you will undoubtedly need it. Note the first letters and numbers like FM-J FM-OR FM-J4A whatever.

You will have to GOOGLE what is written on line #1 this only works if you use google search engine or else it will take you some where different.

1.Type in fairbank morres magneto data
2.You should see this- Fairbanks-Morse Menu - Oldengine.org
3.Click on it
4.Now say you have FM-OR4B4 Mag. Look Under the top left side row under were it says (TYPE) The first one in this case has 2 mags in it FM-R & FM-OR click on were it says (Cross-Section) to the right of FM-OR It will pull up a picture of the inside of the mag.
5.Now Go back to the first page Click on (F-M Fundamentals) near the center second row go to page 49 50 this covers the points.
Hope it helps Byron

Which FM mag do you have? Most common are type J and type X. Type J you will have to retime the internal gears.

The cap gaskets really hold sometimes. Place a knife blade on th he gasket and gently tap on the knife. Do not put pressure near the screw holes that will break the corners. FM distributor caps are fragile crack easy.

The only thing I can seeon on the mag is 3W and 3O. It also says it,s mfd for allis.I will pull the plugs and check for spark as soon as this snow stormnis over, here in northern Mi.Thanks for your responce.
