checking starter

hi, i was wondering if anyone knew how to check a starter and a starter relay using an ohm meter? i've had to jump my old '48 8n off a few times. so i was over at tractor supply last week. i figured while i was there i might as well get a new battery. wasn't sure which one, but they had a book hanging there telling what battery is used on what. so i bought the one that was listed. and i bought some new battery cables, because the ones that are on there were in bad shape. looked like they had gotten real hot. well i was going to put everything on today. the new battery was a lot bigger than the old one. still it's 12 volts, my tractor has been converted over to 12 volts. but it was almost too big to go into the battery compartment. i put everything on, hit the switch and the solenoid started clicking and i saw a spark or 2 come from right around the starter relay. the relay had already looked like it had gotten hot at some time. that's where the positive battery cable looked burned as well. so i figured that the starter relay must be bad. so i went, got a new one and put it on. the relay clicks repeatedly then stops. try again and nothing. wait a few minutes and it will do the same thing again. i've tried to make sense of it all. even tried to use a jumper cable to bring a positive from the battery straight to the other side of the relay. still couldn't get it to turn over when i hit the switch. i've got the battery on charger right now. it had gotten to the point where when you hiot the switch the voltage would drop down to nothing. any help would be much appreciated.

nope i pulled the starter down it was free. last night i decided to fool with it some more after i'd had time to clear my head. and it seems that where the ground was for the relay wasn't good. i moved it to another spot and it fired up. so i think i'm going to eventually rewire the thing. but thanks fer the response.
