Looked at 98 Chev 3500 ext. cab dually today.454 motor, auto trans,4wd. nice shape, runs quiet. Was wondering about the tranny. Are they problematic?Has 130,000 miles. Also what kind of mpg could one expect running empty 55-60mph.Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Chevy"s are not known for tranny problems and i would not worry about having any with that truck unless it has been abused. Dad special ordered an "88 GMC K3500 ext cab, long box, 4x4 with 454 and 4.10 gears. He had that until November of "02 and never had a single problem with the engine or transmission. Empty mileage at 60MPH should be around 14 I would guess as that "98 would have the vortec.

GM big blocks are known for using oil, although we have never seen it. Should not be a problem just dont worry if you notice your using a little.

Your miles per gallon will range between 8mpg to 14mpg. Most often you will get 10 to 11.

I don't know if they have the same tranny, but I have a 92 3500 with 6.5 diesel with a 4L80-E tranmission and 158000 miles on it. The transmission has been out of it twice. Spends some time pulling trailers. The first time pulled in the yard with stocktrailer and pulled it into reverse and wouldn't move. GM dealer worked on it. After putting another 50 to 60 thousand mile on it, its back into the shop after it quit shifting into high and finilly reverse. The repair man said a plug inside the tranmission that has a wire coming from the truck computer come unpluged. The GM men were the only people in there.

I currently own a 1994 Chev 2500 single wheel 5.7 gas engine extended cab 8' box, auto trans, towing package, all the bells and whistles, etc. It currently has approx. 128000 miles on the clock. The only unscheduled repairs are one alternator and starter (not at the same time), and one radiator repair. Gas milage is 13.5 mpg.(its no longer my daily driver, price of gas precludes that. I now drive my wife's Focus.) Approx. one quart oil every 2000 miles, nothing but syn. oil since new. Change oil once a year whether it needs it or not.

I could rattle on all day about this vehicle but I don't want to bore you. (Positive comments, I really can't say anything bad.)
