Chevy Instrument cluster ??

Hope asking a truck ? won't be out of line,I work with the truck..Got a 2004 Silverado
The entire instrutment cluster "died" No gauges/speedo/or anything.I read on internet this is common in these trucks.
I see a lot of rebuild services on e-bay.
Have any of you had this problem,and what is the best repair/replace method.

This is a common problem. I took mine to a shop that specializes in electrical problems. The cluster has 7 (I think) different servo motors in it. If they go into it, have allreplaced or you will be going back for more repairs later. It does seem a little unusual if all quit at once though. On mine, only part of the gauges were bad.

I would check for a blown fuse for the cluster first - then again if it is blown -what caused it?

Big Ed It is a common problem for that year chevy. We here at our dealership use an aftermarket place. They will take ours and repair it, usually takes 2 or 3 days. mechanic is not here and I cant remember the name of the place. Some where in Iowa. If i can get it I will post later today.

I sent mine to the guy on ebay--Speedometer Repair Guy---, Quick turn around.but check for fuse problem first. You get your cluster repaired not exchanged

Just checked the GM wiring diagram and the fuses are as follows: Underhood fuse IPC/DIC or SEO and this is battery power. Ignition power is IGN E or SEO Ign. The ground is most likely near the driver door pillar and it is terminal B12 at the instrument cluster connector. The ground wire is black with a white strip. The instrument cluster receives the gauge information from the engine computer and then operates the gauges. I would have somebdy install a scan tool and see if the scan tool can read data from the Engine computer and the instrument cluster.

Check with your dealer. Chevrolet knows there is a problem and they will warranty it. Not sure on the miles/years, but it's longer than the 3/36 warranty it had from the factory.

If your in a part of the country served by Auto Trader (free at carryouts) there are 2-3 that advertise rebuilt GM clusters in the back few pages.

This guy does them for the dealers around the Dallas Ft worth area, I believe 150 of them a month. He'll rebuild yours and send it back to you, and you can still use your truck with the cluster removed..

Had my 2003 K2500HD cluster replaced @ 16k mi in 2005. 3/36 cluster warranty extended to 70k mi from original delivery date, can't remember what year(s) added. New cluster was suppose to be updated "no bugs" version but was losing functions within months and 3k mi. Next complete cluster was installed and programed at the same dealership by a factory tech rep who was there conducting various training sessions.

Rep told me the problem was the cluster was developed to accomodate steering wheel buttons that some trucks, including mine, did not have and there was some unexpected interface input conflicts.

I worked ship automation systems for years. The bottom line is when you add/delete inputs to the existing there has to be reprograming to suit but not always possible to predict conflicts that are going to bite your arse down the line.

We just had the same problem with the wife's 2004 Suburban. Spedo would read 120 mph while sitting still in park. GM knows and acknowledges the problem, there was no recall, but a class action suite filed against them. If there less than 70K miles, they cover the instrument cluster and labor. If its less than 80K miles, they cover the instrument cluster and the labor is on you. Its about 45 minutes to replace it. Do a google/bing search, there are lots of info about the instrument cluster.

There's a service bulletin that provides warranty coverage for 7 years/ 70,000 miles on this. My HD2500 just did the same thing....I (literally an hour ago) just sent the cluster in to Southern Electronics (Richmond, Va) to be rebuilt because i'm out of warranty. Go to YouTube- theres some video on removing the cluster, etc
