At least it is a hybrid, so I suppose it can keep going with a total battery failure? If it were pure BEV, I would sure pass on it at that age, because standard BEV has battery warranty to 10 years and after that, if it needs a battery, the cost will be more than car is worth. Time to meet the crusher.

Clearly he has no children that he cares about, so I'll forego the obvious of "time + unknown variables * massive potential energy = don't be stupid!!" discussions. In any event, I was specifically warned away from those cars. You see, I have a good old 5 ton 6 X 6. These cars, like the basic crappy Subaroes, seem to be the perfect size that -when you run 'em over them - they get hung up under your Tool Boxes and BEFORE the central axle/ tires can grab it. Then ya got to back up and re-squish it with your fr. axle, go back into fwd gear and then and only then you can completely and easily drive over it. Not Cool!
"-when you run 'em over them". Don't you know better than to do that!

Terrell TX, Saturday, 4 of 5 in a Ford F-150 killed in collision. Update, the 5th has now died from injuries, making 6 total, 3 semis the F-150 and 3 cars.

I'm sure most of us have purchased vehicles that, in retrospect, were poor choices. If your son likes the Volt, I see no reason he shouldn't buy it. It will probably be a learning experience for him, one way or another.

I've known several folks who bought or leased new Volts, but I don't know anyone who currently owns one. They went out of production after 2019, not so much because they were bad but rather because they were an expensive car to build and difficult to sell for a price that was profitable.

Here are my concerns: The Volt is a complicated vehicle that shares few if any parts with other GM models. Your son is likely to be dependent on the dealer for parts and service, since there aren't enough of them on the road to support a big aftermarket industry. GM tries to provide parts support for ten years after end of production, meaning parts will dry up after 2029, if not sooner. And your son may have a hard time finding a dealer with a Volt-qualified mechanic. (That's a problem I've run into with my Duramax Silverado, which IS still in production.) As long as the Volt keeps running, he'll be fine. But a fairly minor issue might force him to park it.

What may I ask are you talking about?

Chevy dealer said the battery runs fron $2500-$4000,installed,depending on some upgrade owners might want to make.He said he never replaced a battery that was worn out from age or use.He did some recalls,a few damaged by accidents,a couple with factory defects, and in what he found hard to believe,a couple of high mile cars where the owners made a pre-emptive strike. He told me to stay away from internet fairy tales, they're entertaining, but not factual.I've studied these things a lot,and personally I don't care for hybrids.I like the idea, but I don't like the complexity of two systems married up together, taking turns.Pick one, either gas or electrons, and go with it.With that said, there a lot of younger Prius owners in my family, and they are all on their second or third vehicles. The only repairs they have had done have been tires and brakes.

"Young people on second & 3rd Prius".....does not speak well for reliability/longevity.

It does to me.35-40 year old nephews who put 180-200,000 miles on them before they trade.I doubt they get much for them, but they trade to stay in a trouble free situation. They would never dream of running something into the ground like I do.Not one of them ever traded up because the car was worn out.I don't have that kind of mindset. Not one of those boys has needed a tow or a roadside rescue since they were 20.Now before that either AAA or I hauled their Camrys,Jettas,Mazdas,Nissans,Cierras, etc in quite a lot. They don't even know what it is like to go to a repair shop now.

I have NEVER needed a roadside rescue or tow in several Chevys and MBs. So, I guess that means these were at least as good as a Prius!
