Chisel plow for Massey 165

I"m wondering if anyone has used a chisel plow(not a cultivator) with a Massey Ferguson 165. I would like to use a 5 shank to plow up my 2 acre garden in spring and fall. Obviously the ground is already broken up, but I just want to be sure I"ll have enough horsepower before I buy the chisel plow.
Thanks

You'd struggle with 3 shanks. 5 would be impossible to do anything useful with a 165. 7 shanks is a stiff load on a 100+ HP tractor, and you've got less than 50.

I use something like this "field cultivator"

It's not a row cultivator, this thing really tears up the soil, then I go back and disc it later.

it also leaves the ground fairly level where a turning plow leaves high and low spots.

has worked for me, I had to take two of the shanks off the plow for my tractor, but I would think a 165 should be able to pull it fine.

might try to find one, it's called a "Field Cultivator"

Fordson Power Major used to pull a 7 tyne chisel
plough OK, can't see you having any problems
with an MF165.

might try to find one of these type
field cultivators

should rip up the ground fine

a 165 MF should blow and go with this type tool.

I have found the 6 tine cultivators in the background of this picture can literally bring a Farmall 200 to a standstill if set too deep.

Don, are you thinking of a disc-chisel? And they would be on a 15" spacing instead of a 12" spacing like a 3 point mounted chisel only would be and I pulled a 5 shank with a Ford 4000 (4100), same rated horsepower as the 165, OK, not deep or fast but OK and for the 5000 (5100) I put the extra 2 shanks on. This was a Ford Brand 2 bar unit. Something like that should work for what he has to do. His big problem gound be the style of 165 he has, the one with 28" wheels would possibly not have the traction but the 38" wheel model should have if tires are loaded plus an extra weight.

My grandfather had a M.F. 165 diesel in the early 80's.

He pulled a five shank Landoll chisel plow with no problem in his soil types.

So the answer to your question relies greatly on your soil type.

The picture is the same plow Gramps had except the pic has more shanks.

In our clay soil, 12-13 HP per shank is realistic. In black loamy soils, the 165, if properly weighted, may very well be able to pull 5 shanks. I know in the flat sandy loams down in south Jersey, they pull much bigger plows and chisels with their tractors than we could ever hope to up here in the foothills.

I brought one like Maxwell has pictured. Mine was a nine tooth. I got it down the 5 teeth and it still works the heck out of my 231 Massey. It does a good job for me though and saves from having to use the plow. I think 7 teeth in that type of plow would work ok on your 165.
