Dad bought one new in 51 with a Red Seal engine on it. Very similar to that one. Oh what memories. Interesting.

I'm kicking myself a bit, for buying the one I have. I have had to tighten my belt a noch. On the other hand, I don't have the scratch to start smoking again. Shoot, I took out a loan for my attention span. ;v)

Any idea of the year of mfg of the self propelled Gehl? New Holland claims to have built the first self propelled forage harvester in 1961 according to an article in the latest Heritage Iron mag.

I'm going to take a guess at 1955 or '56. I just received a Gehl forage brochure & between the trucks & tractors, that's the start date I'm at. I do accept the fact that the photos could be older, but the brochure still shows Gehl green. I do know the larger Chop King was made from 1964 to '69. If you keep your eyes peeled, next spring/summer, I'll be posting more details when I find them out then.

Never heard of Heritage Iron before. I'll have to check out an issue. Thanks for the heads-up!

My dad bought one in 54 a used Gehl, exactly like the one pictured. That one was 49 model. Previous owner had a motor on it and converted to PTO.

Neat! Did it have the row-crop head, too? I've often wondered how well they work.
