Chopping corn today

Started last evening we were going to wait till Monday but the plants are dried down to 35% DM so we're going. Have the processor snugged in tight as it can go without rubbing and it's making a nice job. Our oldest son is chopping today.The crop could be heavier but considering how dry it was this summer were happy.

Chopping silage and filling the bunker silo and upright silo was one of my favorite times of the year. We would have family and neighbors come together to help fill the bunker silo. My uncle brought his 4320 JD tractor with front end loader to push silage. My grandpa's first cousin was there with his 450 Farmall with duals to pack. My dad was in the 4440 with the Gehl pull type chopper. My uncle, a neighbor, and I were bringing wagon loads of fresh chopped silage to unload. It was a great time of the year with lots of activity and numerous practical pranks played on one another.

I was chopping today also, well trying too. Between the knife not cutting on one side of the corn head, flat on a wagon then flat front on the 2745, then the Badger broke its front apron chain!

Was thinking it is one of those days that is if I tried to pee on the ground I wouldn't be able to hit it! LOL

About 20-22 acres left here yet. It is a late maturing BMR variety that I planted late to "stretch the window." Seems we succeeded, as it was still 69.5 yesterday, and giving the bagger fits. It should go tomorrow.

It's always interesting how some hybrids dry differently than others. Yours has great color yet for being 65% moisture. The stuff we were in yesterday was pretty dried up looking, but you could wring the juice out yet.

Yup we all have those! That's why I love corn so much,you go till you have to stop,no crop down drying out in the sun getting ruined or rained on. Fairly relaxing and minimal stress

Thanks you folks too! We're wanting to try BMR's here too but the heat unit requirements are still fairly high for this area but they will come down eventually.

Glad I finished up a week ago when I did before that 90 degree heat set in. I'm chopping a load every three days and running some out on the ground to the cows every morning. It's getting so dry that they aren't wild about even eating it. I ran some out this morning and they followed the wagon right back up to the gate. I think I can pick in ten days to two weeks if I put it in a narrow crib.

They have some in the low 90s day maturity now. With that stuff I go about a week longer than I would dare with a grain corn...

Thank you! We picked up the chopper this spring ,it's an 04 model worked on 2 different 65 cow dairies before ours so it's not worn too much for the year. Our 781 International now just sits for emergency back up for haylage. We found the high dump last winter to replace our old 1200 Richardton which would hardly half fill a 16' dump truck. This one rounds it pretty well. Gave it a paint job at home over the summer.

Ours is just past 1/3 milk line and I wanted to wait till it was 2/3 but the dry summer we had the plants are more dry than the cob is mature.
