Greetings:
I have a drill press with a 1/2 inch capacity chuck, and could not find a chuck key at Home Depot. I need help on finding out if there are standards for chucks and keys. My drill press is a no-name unit, from an auction-type vendor (Homier).
.Any help appreciated!

INFO OFF INTERNET:

To identify the correct chuck key for your drill press, check the chuck body for stamped model numbers (e.g., "Jacobs 33BA"), measure the pilot hole diameter (usually \(1/4"\) or \(5/16"\)), and count the gear teeth. If no numbers exist, measure the hole diameter with calipers and purchase a matching size, or buy a versatile 4-way chuck key. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Steps to Identify Your Chuck Key:
  • Check for Markings: Carefully examine the body of the chuck for stamped numbers or manufacturer names. Common brands include Jacobs or Supreme. Numbers like "JT33" or "33BA" directly indicate the key size needed.
  • Measure the Pilot Hole: Use calipers to measure the exact diameter of the pilot hole (the small hole where the key goes in). Common pilot sizes are \(1/4\) inch (\(6\text{mm}\)) or \(5/16\) inch (\(8\text{mm}\)).
  • Count the Teeth: Count the number of teeth on the chuck gear. The key's teeth must match this count and pitch.
  • Measure Chuck Capacity: Open the chuck fully and check the max opening capacity (e.g., 0-1/2" or 0-13mm) to narrow down the size, often stamped on the body.
  • Use a 4-Way Key: If you cannot find a specific number, a 4-way chuck key usually fits most standard hobby and industrial drill presses, providing four common sizes in one tool. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Key Identification Resources:
  • Contact Manufacturer: If the drill press model is known, the user manual will list the replacement part.
  • Replacement Options: Many industrial suppliers or online retailers, such as Amazon, offer universal replacement keys if you know the pilot hole diamete

McMaster Carr probably has jt.

Reddit says: "Note: For many inexpensive Chinese drill presses, it is sometimes more practical to replace the entire chuck, which can cost as little as $16-$30"

I bought a $5.00 Black and Decker drill at the flea market. (Back in the '80s it cost about $130 new.) A new chuck key made for it would be $30 shipped. I got out my box of old chuck keys and found one that looked like it would work.

A no name drill press may have a no name chuck that had a key made just for it.

Take the chuck off and see if you can get a good Jacobs chuck (with key) to fit it. Otherwise just try keys from Harbor Freight or what you find in flea markets that look like they might fit.

I do not know of any "standard" for drill chuck keys; manufacturers make the keys to fit their chucks. Some will interchange; some won't.

Google "Drill chuck size chart" select images, there are a number of size charts. You will also get a large selection of venders.

A lot of Homier brand drill presses did not have a removable chuck. You had to replace the entire Arbor that had the chuck attached to it.
A new arbor with a key can still be gotten for them at around $200 a pop.

The quality of Jacob's chucks has gone down unfortunately.

That is interesting, that would be a lot of work and expense. My knock off drill press has a removeable chuck with a number 2 morse taper but with no slot to drive in a wedge for removal. You have to clamp onto the chuck or drill to drive it out. Speaking of Homier I used to enjoy the Cummings truck as they sold a lot of toys also. I bought a space gun for the kids when they were little it made a crazy amount of irritating noises and to my wife's annoyance it never broke.
