Cleaning Hydraulic Pump

I was planning on dropping my hydraulic pump to clean pump and replace my lift cylinder this spring on my newly acquired TO 20. I have read that these are exactly the same as a 9N. My question is are they the same as far as removing the pump and lift cover? Thanks for any information.

Yes they are both the same, but you can run into trouble if you don't know what you are doing. Try filling with Engine Flushing oil and running with that for a while and drain it when it is hot. It will clean it and it will also clean the Transmission which you can't normally do unless you dismantle it. You can pull out the PTO shaft to check just how dirty it is, not all Transmissions are dirty, it will depend on how the previous owner changed the oil, but pulling the PTO will tell you. NOT tearing it down can save you a lot of problems if you get it wrong and forget something. It isn't vital that it is 100% clean as the sludge will trap a lot of crud for you. What you do need to do is make sure that there isn't any water entering the system, through the bottom of the Gear Change Lever and through the Draft Spring at the back of the drivers seat.Fit a rubber Boot to the Gear Lever and fit a new Felt seal to the Draft Spring. When you refill with oil use 10W/30 oil for a petrol engine, this will stay more fluid when cold. My advice is unless you know what you are doing and if the hydraulics are working OK, just change the oil and make sure that there is no water entering, as it is this that causes problems not so much the crud in the bottom.
