Cleaning the Air Filter

Hello Great American N'ers,
Any suggestions on the best/easiest way to clean out the oil bath air filter? I mean the canister part not the oil cup. It says to use solvent, what type of solvent should be used? Gasoline? other? Should I immerse/soak it. Blow it out with air? water? Allow it to dry afterwards? How do I tell if it is sufficiently clean?
Thanks greatly for your suggestions!

5 gal bucket of gas and you drop it in shake it every few hours for a day or 2. Then pull it out hang it for a few hours and install. Strain the gas so you can then use in in the fuel tank

While gas is great, a 5 gal bucket would currently cost $16ish. Seems a bit expensive to use for a solvent. Anything cheaper that works just as well?

As a solvent for cleaning the air cleaner it is about as cheap as your going to find. Kero or diesel will cost a good bit more as will any other solvent. With the gas you can in fact filter it and then use it in the tractor. All you need is a funnel with a screen and a simple paint filter and you can then use the gas in the tractor. Ya it will cause the tractor to smoke a bit due to the fact it will have some oil mixed in but that will help not hurt the engine
