Cleaning the oil drain plug

After draining the oil on my "new" 8N, I took the plug outside to clean the screen and associated grime. Rinsed it in gasoline, used a brush on the screen. The oil was really dirty.
Looking straight down inside the screen, the bottom was very smooth and black. Almost thought I was finished, but I stuck my end of my parts brush down there and it gave a little. Wow, about a half inch of hard tar like sludge! Glad I checked it. Soaked and brushed, soaked and brushed. When it was finally clean, the bottom looked like the reverse of the casting plug - as it should. Ha, couldn't snap a pic at that point, my hands/gloves were black! So for newbies like me, don't quit too soon on cleaning that drain plug.

Looks pretty ugly. The inside of the rest of your engine
is probably similar. What's you plan to clean it out?

I thought the same thing until I examined the drained oil. The oil itself was just dirty, the sludge was captured by the metal cup shape at the bottom of the screen, about a half inch maybe. I took the pic after the gas dissolved it a bit and I saw how thick it was. I figured the cup part hadn't been cleaned for awhile. Once the new oil circulates should tell me lots. I will see how the new oil looks after a few hours and change it as soon as needed.
I haven't the new oil yet. The tractor had a new steel fuel line in,but it blocked removing the filter. I took that off and it was only held by about two threads on the sediment bowl. I will probably have to replace it, I will work on it tomorrow, but most of the threads were gone.

You have not yet seen the worst.

Remove the oil filter canister when you next change the oil filter and remove the sediment from the bottom.

You will likely find 1/2" - 1" of sediment in the bottom. As much of this will likely be bearing material, you will need metal tools to loosen it.

That the sediment is there simply means that the system has been working and it is of little concern unless it reaches the level of the discharge line.

While rebuilding my 9N several years ago, I drilled and tapped the drain plug for a pipe thread socket head screw. When I drained the engine proir to the rebuild, I was surprised at how far the flange on the drain plug threw oil. Now I just unscrew the pipe plug for easy draining. Once drained, remove the big plug to clean screen.
