Picked this tool up in a box of stuff at online auction, but not sure exactly what it is used for? Is magnetic as well. Some kind of pipe layout tool maybe?

Very useful tool for many skilled trades, I remember the machinists at work using them. When I first saw your post I expected to see one like I had in my sailboat! Many larger sailboats have one so the skipper can keep the boat at the most efficient angle of heel.

ipeline welders and I suppose others use these to find and punch mark the top of a pipe. If rotated one can use it to find the side or another angle other than top.

It's HazMat FYI, note the "Mercury Balanced". Not that it isn't cool, but good chance there is a sizeable quantity of HazMat Mercury in there that you won't want to have spill.

Thanks for all the replys. Now I am caught between taking to work and giving to one of the pipe fitters or taking to hazordous disposal
because of the mercury someone warned me about. In googling dangers of mercury it has me concerned but it seems like it shouldnt pose any
more danger than having a old thermometer or barometer around? But if dropped could it rupture? I guess I better take to next hazordous waste
day at the landfill.

I suspect it contains a lot more mercury than a thermometer, probably more than old mercury switches as well. It also appears to be built like a tank so I'd not be overly concerned about it, just aware of the hazard. Use in your shop or use as decor on a shelf. Personally since I use the mini-mag digital protractors for the applications that would be for I'd put it on a shelf to decorate my shop office.

Good morning; I have always had the idea that mercury by itself is pretty stable, but that when chemically combined with certain other elements, the resulting material can be hazardous. Sorry, my high school chemistry class is too far in the past, I don't have clear recollections of some things.

Pretty valueable tool you have there. I have one in my machinist toolbox. Those are still listed in the McMaster- carr catalog as a center locator for over $300.00.
