Took the clutch apart and didn t realize only one end of the dog has a hole in it.Which way does it go? Mechanic at JD said it would make no difference.Got to be a certain way to go I would think.

you put a little high temp grease on it and the end with the hole goes into the dog, its holds a little bit of grease a while longer. That is what an old JD mechanics told me about fifty years ago. I've always done mine the same since. Some will tell me I'm wrong but its worked for me. good luck, john

As stated in service bulletin No-229 dated June 1955. The three C434R toggles with new 3/16 deep hole
recess on one is to retain grease. The recessed end is placed in the socket of the clutch operating sleeve.
Operating sleeve also has a grease zerk to grease; to fill the three sockets with grease. All this reduces
wear in the three sockets in the operating sleeve......
