Clutch Adjustment

I have a 1948 8N and have too much free play in my clutch pedal (difficult to shift into gear since the clutch is not fully disengaged). Per the I&T manual, I have adjusted the clevis rod as far as it will go but it apears that I have a LOT of wear in the brake cross shaft bushings and the bushing in the clutch pedal. Can the brake cross shaft be removed and new bushings installed in the case without breaking the tractor appart? Unlike the clutch cross shaft, there does not appear to anything mounted internally that would keep the brake shaft from slipping out once the left brake pedal it removed. Any advise on this would be most appreciated.

I'm now going through the same process on my 1950. Most of the wear on mine was the bushing inside the clutch pedal. The clutch cross shaft bushings were worn but not as much as the pedal bushing. You must split the tractor to replace these due to the fork on the throw out bearing.

To answer your question: It's possible to change the brake cross shaft bushings without splitting the tractor. Remove the shaft. Drive an awl between the bushing and case to collapse the bushing and pull it out with needle nose pliers. To install the new bushings; Use the cross shaft as a bushing driver to keep the bushing aligned in the bore. Use a dead blow hammer so as not to booger up the end of the shaft.

Safe Travels!!
