Clutch Fork Assembly

Help...I am trying to remove the clutch fork (the half moon shaped part) assembly from my 1945 model A John Deere.I already have the cover off as well as the fork rod that slides down through it. I have talked to several people and I know that the fork should just slide out of the housing but mine will not come out. For one thing the fork it jammed up against the inside of the housing all the way to the left if you are looking straight into the housing. When I try to pull it out it catches the lip of the housing. Now, if I could get the fork to move to the right and inch or two it might slide right out. But, I can not get it to move to the right. So, what is my problem and what am I doing wrong? This probably sounds confusing, so if there is anyone who thinks they could help me over the phone give me your number and I will call...or I will email direct if necessary. Thanks

Sounds like the collar will not slide all the way right like it should. will the collar move at all? Is the clutch engaged? That would lock the collar in the wrong position for removing the fork. Otherwise something inside is broken or stuck. Why are you taking it apart?

Did you remove the pulley facings/driver so the operating sleeve is free to move in and out on the crankshaft?

Not sure what you mean. I'm only working with the clutch fork cover and rod removed. I have not removed any of the belt pulley mechanism as I don't think it should be necessary. Thanks

Cliff, you have the correct idea of the situation. The fork piece that the rod goes down through will move up and down with ease. I just can't get it to move to the right at all because it is jammed against the housing to the left if you are looking straight into the cover opening. This tractor is a hand start. I wonder if I rotate the flywheel clockwise would the movement of the crankshaft in this direction cause the fork to move to the right? I have tried about every clutch and gear position imaginable...what position should they be in? The reason I took the clutch rod out in the first place was to take it to a machine shop to have it built up at the top where it had an awful lot of play. I also put in a new clutch lever bolt and the clutch lever mechanism is tight now. I just can't get the clutch fork out for re-assembly. Buck

With tension on the T-Bolts, I don;t think the operating sleeve, which has the groove that the fork rides in, can move laterally far enough to allow the fork to collar to pass. I think you'll need to at least loosen the T-Bolt nuts (3) to give added clearance.

Gear makes no difference. The clutch should be disengaged which should place the collar closest to the center of the tractor. You should also be able to slide the collar by hand when disengaged.

I know I need to remove the cover on the belt pulley to access the (3) T-bolts. What is the proper amount that they need to be loosened?

Also,is this the same as the clutch facing/driver in your first post?

Thanks, Ray

I got the clutch fork problem solved yesterday. As suggested the (3) bolts behind the belt pulley cover had to be backed off enough to allow the clutch fork to free up and come out so it could all be put back together and re-installed. Many thanks to Cliff and F-I-T.
