clutch removal

I'm a rookie trying to remove a B&S Vanguard 21 horse engine from a Husqvarna YTH2148 tractor to install a new engine. All goes well until I try to remove the clutch from the shaft. When trying to remove the hex bolt on the underside, the shaft gently turns. Any suggestions? Standard tools and average mechanical ability.

Thats where an air powered impact wrench comes in handy. The shock of turning the bolt will usually break it loose. And re-tighten it when putting it back together.

If you don't have an air/electric impact wrench,remove flywheel cover & block flywheel so crankshaft won't turn.

If after blocking flywheel,shaft still rotates when trying to remove bolt,if eng & battery still on tractor,reconnect battery & clutch coil connector,turn ign sw to on/run position & turn on pto sw,see if clutch strong enough to hold assembly & crankshaft while trying to remove bolt when energized,if eng off tractor,block flywheel & connect jumpers from battery to clutch coil connector & try loosening bolt,if clutch will not hold with eng on/off tractor,then you'll need to buy/borrow an impact wrench to remove bolt as rusty said.IF you intend to junk/scrap eng,remove plugs & stick a screwdrive/steel rod into one of the plug holes & let piston run up against same instead of blocking flywheel,if you damage plug threads,punch a hole in piston it's of no matter,thing I forgot in 1st reply is most elect clutch's are a clutch/brake combo,when de-energized clutch plate acts as a brake for blades & will probably slip when trying to loosen bolt,when energized clutch plate locked to crankshaft thru clutch assembly.

On a 2 cycle engine you can pull the spark plug and shove rope into the cyl. Not sure if you can do that with a 4 stroke because of the valves? If you are junking the engine anyway it should work.
