Clutch return spring - '65 4020

Okay, let me apologize in advance for a basic and simple question but can't find an answer.

I recently purchased a '65 (originally thought it was a '68) 4020 and the clutch action isn't as stiff as I'm used to; I have about 1" of pedal free travel if I pull the pedal up by hand, but the spring doesn't pull the pedal all the way on its own. I'm thinking the return spring is either worn out after almost 50 years or incorrect (or both).

The current return spring is attached to the clutch pedal above the pivot and is hooked through a slot in the floorboard and over a nail laying cross-ways to the slot; it just doesn't look like how the factory would have done it.

What is the return spring supposed to anchor to?

IIRC there are 2 slots in the floorboard that one end of spring attaches to and a hole made on pedall arm for the other end of spring.

That doesn't sound right. I know my 2520 has quite a heavy spring, and I have replaced it. A neighbors 3020 is nearly identical, and I imagine the 4020 is also.
As TX Jim says, the correct spring has kind of an elongated flat area on the hook end that lays on the platfrom through the slot/hole combination.
