Was using it a little without trouble then 1 day i pulled a gate with it and shut it off. When i restarted it ,it woukdnt go in gear only grind...ive tried running it in several gears by lowering idle as low as it will go and depressing clutch and quickly popping it into first....nothing helps.

First check the clutch adjustment by the book. However, it sounds like you may have to split the tractor to access the clutch and find the problem.

If you’ve got a reverser, make sure it’s in the forward (or reverse) position. When I first started my 420 it would t move F-R. I discovered the reverser wasn’t fully engaged. Bingo, it works fine.

Does you clutch have a strong peddle? You should feel an inch or so of just spring pressure free play before it starts disengaging with a firm foot.

I put a completely new clutch in, surfaced flywheel with new ring gear, disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing. It’s too grabby, I need to slip it some to break it in.

These is the best manuals I have, it’s a reprint of the original JD parts manual. I also use service manuals, Jen Sales reprint and a Clymers (I think).

The Big Book part numbers are true to what a dealer uses to make it easier and more professional to order JD parts.

The 420 and 430 service manual is John Deere publication number SM2019. It recommends having SM2013 (for the 40 series) as well since SM2019 refers to using info in SM2013, they figured the dealers already had SM2013 so why bother to include it in SM2019, just point the mechanics to where to find it. They also reference SM2000 (Tractors & Engines, Overview of older tractors, all models prior to and including the 435) which they expected the dealers to already have.

Yes guys,i did use the adjustment cam...didnt change anything at all. I do have a strong pedal it just isnt doing anything ..ive adjusted and readjusted. As i said in my previous post i bought it from a jd mechanic and it ran perfect...i only use it a little as i have many other tractors but had run it 5 minutes earlier with no probs, then shut it off. When i restarted it it wouldnt go into gear just grinds. The jd mechanic had no pedal freeplay in it so im hoping its not finished. I dont know what a reverser is please enlighten me. It is the optional 5 speed.

I don't think it has a reverser if it's a ag tractor and not a Industrial one.

Sounds like the pilot bearing in the clutch locked up and won't let the clutch stop spinning. #23 in the picture.

Pilot bearing is in the flywheel, not inside the clutch. If it locked up and seized to the transmission input shaft, it would keep the transmission turning even with the clutch disc disengaged from the flywheel and pressure plate. There would be no change in how the clutch pedal works or feels if that is what happened.

In any case this appears to be a split the tractor to find out what is wrong.
