clutch throw and cotter pin leak

Hello,

How much throw should I have on the clutch of a Ford 4000? Don"t know what clutch is in the tractor IE single or double clutch.

Also I have a lot of what looks like tranny fluid leaking from the cotter pin/vent hole on the bottom of the tractor. I take it that the front tranny seal needs to be replaced?

If anyone has any input that would be helpful. Thanks Ed

always need to specify 3 cyl or 4 cyl, when mentioning models that existed in both versions.

also need to list trans type, and if a 3 cyl, the model id so we can see what pto option it had, to help determine clutch type.

the cotter pin leak is, if trans fluid, almost always a trans input shaft seal leak.

post back some details.

According to the model number you have a 2000 with the 134 cu in engine. A 4000 has a 172 cu in engine. Transmissions are the same on both tractors. The 4 speed never had a double clutch- only the 5 speed was available with it in order to have Live PTO.
The leak out the cotter pin is either transmission fluid leaking from the input shaft seal or engine oil leaking past the rear main seal.
Your clutch pedal should move about 3/4" before any resistance is felt. You do not want the throwout bearing touching the clutch release fingers when the pedal is released.

If it's the input shaft seal, it's an easy fix. You'll just have to split the tractor. As a suggestion, while it's apart check the rear main, clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, throw-out and pilot bearing. Since it's split now is a good time to take care of them so you won't have to split it again. As a thought, I'm not sure how the hydraulic oil runs from the pump to the hyd housing, but the five speeds have tubes running through the trans and sometimes they will spring a leak.
