Clutch

My 77 wouldn"t shift (had to grind it into gear ). Pulled the motor and removed the bell housing and found that the bearing and the clutch plate fingers assembly were seized and ground to nothing. I replace the bearing and put a new to me clutch assembly in. Reintstalled everything. Adjusted the clutch rod but it still grinds gears as if clutch not disegaging. What did I overlook to rectify the problem?

I assume that you replaced the pressure plate. Did you replace the friction disk? Check to make sure your arm that moves the throwout bearing isn't cracked. I would have to look to see if the 77 has this but some tractors have an adjustment on the pivot ball that the throwout arm pivots on. Make sure the pressure plate is good and doesn't have any cracks, especially in the fingers that the throwout bearing contacts. I would also make sure nothing is warped, especially the friction disk and the pressure plate. A warped disk won't want to release all the way. Good luck.
