I have a 1948 M and the clutch pedal is near the top of travel when released. Is there an easy way for a non mechanic to adjust the clutch so that it takes hold sooner when released? Thanks for any help or pictures.

adjust the clutch rod so u have 3/4 to 1" of free play between clutch pedal and trans case where it rests. but from your info that is a good indication you will be due for a clutch job.adjust and see how it works, if it dont slip under load you may still be ok.
