Clutches and brakes

The hand-clutch thread below got me thinking. Seems to me, when you are driving a tractor it goes at a certain speed. But if you step on an individual brake it always seems like it spins around at about twice the speed. Always made me a little jumpy with a cultivator and trying to count rows.

I was just wondering if there was a good reason why it would appear to go faster on the turn, or if there's something wrong with my tractor?

Because of the differential, on wheel MUST speed up by the amount the other slows down.

If you brake one wheel to a full stop, the other wheel will be turning TWICE it's original speed.
