Cockshutt 20 puller carb

Big Puller

New User
I am building a Cockshutt 20 for pulling. I already put a f163 in it. I don’t have a carburetor yet and I’m wondering what I should be looking for..thanks

Here’s a general rule of thumb, dyno proven: big carbs don’t make big horsepower!! Also: big jets don’t increase hp, A/F just needs to a cleanly mixed 14:1, dependent on the density air at the pull.

I have worked on a lot of F163’s, but I don’t remember whether a Cockshutt 20 is updraft or downdraft?

The original motor had a marvel shebler tsx480 on it. I was wondering if that would work on the bidder f163
That carb should work really well to start with, just don't set the mix too rich for pulling, I would run the mix slightly on the lean side for maximum horsepower. This doesn't sound right but trust me you will see a horsepower gain with the mixture slightly lean. Do you know how to read spark plugs for both fuel and timing? Make sure you have the correct heat range for your spark plugs also. Are you allowed to use E85 fuel?

Does your carb have an adjustable main jet on the bottom of the float bowl? If it does, this is the desirable option as it makes tuning under load very easy!

The best way to tune a pulling tractor is with a dyno, then take it to the track and continue tuning with practice pulls. When I first started pulling, I didn't have a dyno and used the tractor brakes, measuring tape and stop watch. I knocked off a lot big names due to a well tuned tractor and luck while my bucks up competition were picking bad lines, wrong tire pressures and not so lucky as they usually had done in the past. I was always nibbling on their tail feathers and had to be watched out for, which made them nervous and prone to mistakes.

If you're really into this build, I can email you my spark plug tuning chart? It's good for another 15 inches!

I always like to help pullers with their needs, let me know, maybe I can help? I live on the west coast so this info shouldn't effect the locals.

I still learning a lot about tuning carbs. I am just getting back in pulling after 10 plus years away from it. Any info is appreciated and thanks

@ollie gm what you said about helping others is one of the best parts of pulling! I too have pretty low budget div 3 tractor and have stomped a lot of big dollar builds on multiple occasions, mines desert sunset but hey, One time at a run what you brung for the weight class pull I stomped to 4.1 limited prostock diesels and not by a a little, ran two hooks back to back, my buddy piloting the first, back to the start line and throw a 100 pounds on for our weight difference, then me down the track, he got 30 feet on them and I got 41, those boys were so mad they wouldn't talk to us for like 30 minutes, then they came over with a peace offering of busch light on ice and we BS'd the rest of the day, it was super fun!
