Im restoring my grandfathers cockshutt30. i sent the block and crank to the machine shop today to get cleaned up and measured. Im just woundering, Ive never drove a tractor pulling anything just always doin a burn around the farmyard. What gear and range is the best to pull with, on this machine. Ive been told 2nd in low range is good?.?.? Any tips on resto be great... Thanks I can also email photos on resto if interested

2nd low is to slow. It should pull high 1st pretty easy, that would be 2.75 mph at stock rpms. On a hard track you might try low 3rd which would be 3.3 mph. It also would depend on what rules you are pulling as far as speed limits. Good Luck.

If your talking about pulling at tractor pulls and if the engine is stock or close to stock with a 18" long and 18" or 20" high hitch 1st low is all you can handle without running out of power in 4000 lb and up. Maybe 2nd low in 3700 and under. Work on your wieght balance and traction and it will craw into the top spots for you. Forget about being fast or playing with division 3 tractors cause they just won't do it. 1st low is 1.6 mph, 2nd low is 2.4 mph, 1st high is 2.7 mph, 3rd low is 3.3 mph, and 2nd high is 4.0 mph. You only have 153 cu.in. and 28 to 30 HP stock, they are a tough little tractor in the division 1 or 2 type classes. It takes all the Cu. In. you can get out of it when rebuilding the engine and the right track condition to run 1st high, 2nd or 3rd low. I pulled a 30 for four years, from stock up to the point it was at when I sold it and have four friends that still pull 30's. Good luck and have fun.
