Cockshutt 40 generator

actually 2 questions... Will the Cocksutt 40 keep running if the battery cable is unhooked?
if the Generator has been unhooked for quite awhile, does it have to be excited? and if it does what is the proper procedure,
Thanks

Yes, I think, it will run off the generator but that's not good for the gen. JohnT will probably have a better answer for you. Do you have a regulator or the original cutout relay?

Mike the reason I asked it shows 10 on the amp meter so I unhooked the ground cable and the tractor quit.. So I'm thinking it's not charging.

10 amps at what engine speed and why did you unhook it? It's charging, just a bit high. Should be about 6-7 at operating RPM, but I'll check my OP manual tomorrow. Do you know how to adjust the third brush?

Hi, I didn't unhook it.. I bought the tractor recently and the wires to the generator were unhooked and just hanging there and I don't know how long they were off..
It shows 10 all the time... No I don't know how to adjust the third brush...

Quality is questionable on a lot of electrical component these days. Just because it's new doesn't mean it works. You're confusing me. You say 10 amps "all the time", even while it's off? Wires were unhooked, did you hook them back up and are you sure they're right? You unhooked the ground, that's why it quit. I'll email you JohnT's troubleshooting guide.

Mike sorry for the confusion.. the 2 wires going to the generator were off hanging loose so I hooked them up and it shows 10 on the amp meter. so I unhooked the ground cable off the battery to see if the tractor would keep running with the battery cable off. that would indicate the generator is working.. but when I took the cable off the battery the tractor wouldn't keep running.

Mike that I don't know... when you say high or low charge position..? A friend who is a mechanic put a meter on it and says he's getting 1 1/2 volts showing on the meter... how do I tell if it's on high or low charge?
Traditional Farmer posted that I should put a one wire alternator on it That sounds tempting but making it 12 volts, wouldn't that be hard on the starter? maybe burn it up? I would think the coil would have to be changed too.

once more I screwed up.. I pulled the cable off the Negative post.. and the tractor quit running.. I forgot it is Positive ground
maybe being 86 I should quit playing with tractors....lol

It's in the light switch. All the way in is low charge. One click out is high charge. Two out is lights on and high charge. It works by connecting the lead from the generator F terminal either through a resistor on the switch for low or bypassing the resistor directly to ground for high. Connecting a wire from the F terminal to battery ground (+) will give you the full generator output. If your friend used a digital voltmeter the reading is useless. You need an analog meter for DC generators. Did you get my email with JohnT's troubleshooting instructions? Personally I'm not a fan of 12v conversions. I like to keep them original. The starter will be OK but lights and coil must be changed.

thanks a heap mike. I had a Cockshutt 40 about 35 years ago and I never knew that.. does that apply to ones with a regulator too??
I guess a Operators manual will be ordered..

Mike I have a generator that came off a Minneapolis Moline M5.. It has a regulator mounted on top of the generator.. my generator on the Cockshutt has a cutout mounted on top.. Do you think I could take that regulator off the Minnie generator and replace the cut out on the Cockshutt with that regulator??

Maybe if you take one brush out of the generator??

OH OK I forgot about th3 brushes and didn't realize that would make a difference... maybe best if I leave well enough alone.
If I take a brush out then I'd have some loose wires.
