Cockshutt 40 tractor...

Friend has a Cockshutt Golden Eagle Blackhawk 40 with a perkins 4 cylinder engine. He is wondering if it is rather rare as most 40 diesels
were the Buda engine. Any info would help with restoration. Were they Golden Eagles or just Blackhawk 40s??

Not that rare, Cockshutt went to the Perkins diesel after AC purchased Buda.

FYI for you> Cockshutt was the first to use a Perkins engine in a North American built tractor. As good as that L-4 engine with Cat owning Perkins and that tractor being close to 60 years old and it being the only North American application of that engine expect to go to Europe to find any parts for the engine.

The tractor described is a 1956 Cockshutt 40D-4 Golden Eagle. They were first offered in CANADA only in 1955 starting at tractor serial number 27,000. These had the red hood paint scheme like all the Cockshutt tractors up to 1956 when the yellow hood BLACK HAWK line was introduced. The BLACK HAWK name was used in the USA only. In CANADA the '56 line was called the DELUXE line.

There are no specific production numbers available for the 40D-4 Golden Eagle tractors. Of the TOTAL 40 tractor production of 14,929,I believe that about 2500+ 40D-4/Golden Eagle tractors were built between '55 and early 1958. They were very popular in the Cockshutt line up during this period. Some 40 tractors were built also during this period with the BUDA gas and diesel engines, but only a few because Allis Chalmers after purchasing the BUDA Engine Co. in Haevey, IL (Chicago are)implemented a reduced supply of engines to Cockshutt..................so Cockshutt used Perkins and Hercules engine manufacturers to make up for the AC "squeeze efforts"!

Have one and they are a nice tractor, This tractor needs injector pump rebuilt and a new diaphram for air govenor.

We have governor air diaphrams on stock here for your COCKSHUTT 40D-4/Golden Eagle . The inline CAV injection pump, you should be able to find a competent rebuilder locally that can do the pump for reasonable funds.
