Cold cold iron up north

Cant get enough of these old machines, like a little kid at Christmas every time I come across some. The Massey 35 is very similar to my tractor at home.

All of these are on a farm where Im staying in Iceland. Took the photos today on a long walk, more of a hike. Good thing theyre not mine as theyd become a permanent part of the landscape back home!

Is the MF 35 a gas job or does it have the Standard 4 cylinder diesel?

I've always found those diesels hard to start in the cold even with the glow plug system in top shape.

Easy enough to find out, its still sitting out there in the snow. Ill check tomorrow. I found it unusual to have the vertical exhaust but they produce a lot of hay here for the sheep so maybe they dont want a low exhaust causing fires. This tractor doesnt have power steering, one of the main things I look for when I see a Massey with loader.

I know Id enjoy it but havent been yet. I normally come in winter and they dont bother to open it until the warm (or warmer) months. If I can make it in the summer Ill definitely visit. Thanks for the suggestion.

Carlmac, if youre still interested its a diesel. Mine back home has the Continental gas motor. This is a nice straight tractorif it were local Id be tempted to make an offer on it. I didnt ask but it looks like theyve left it for dead. They have a lot of other newer working tractors on this farm.

Thanks. Yeah, that's a decent looking tractor. Too bad it's that engine. I owned one of them a bunch of years ago and have worked on a few for other people too. I don't have much use for that engine.

Yep. Far superior engine than the Standard diesel.

The 35 and 135 Massey Fergusons with the Perkins 3cylinders were the best tractors in their class for many years and still are a good choice for a multi purpose tractor.
