Cole planter?

I just got this to plant corn in the spring. Is it a Cole? Corn plate? Any tips for planting would be great.

That's the late model Cole planter. I have one. They work quite well. The plates are expensive, or were many years ago when I got the planter. Probably more so now. Check for loose parts, lubricate, do a
dry run to see if the corn is dropping evenly. If the spacing is not right, maybe you can find sprockets to change the speed of the plate. or maybe reversing two sprockets will work. I didn't have any
trouble with spacing.

I once had a 2 row planter with that plate arrangement which also worked well, but after the deer ate my soybeans I decided I didn't need a 2 row planter. For garden use I just lay off with digging tool, a
minature mattock, and cover with a hoe. That produces enough for the 2 of us, but I may increase the corn some next year, since I had production problems this year.

I just noticed that that planter was a horse drawn planter originally and someone has put one of the single fast hitch attachments on it. I don't know enough about them to say if it is a IH or an AC. Let us know how it works out if you have one of those tractors to pull it.

IH, AC had nothing like that. And have never seen a Cole planter, never heard of them except on here.

Definitely a Cole planter for a single fast hitch like would hook to a small Farmall/IH tractor with Fast Hitch like a Cub,Super A,140 etc.Good planters your appears to be a large
corn plate,over 100 different plates have been available for those planters at one time or another to plant everything from pumpkins,peas,beans,corn,Cotton,sorghum,peanuts etc.Those planters are usually found mostly in the Southeast US and many sold in vegetable growing areas of New Jersey.I have a collection of over 200 Cole and Brinly plates and several planters.Also be aware when looking for plates that there are left hand an right hand plates.Look on the back of the plate usually some information is stamped into the metal.

What you have is a Cole horse drawn planter that was converted to 1 Point Farmall Fast Hitch for Farmall 140,130, Super A, or Cub tractor. In this part of the south you see these quite often at estate sales and auctions. The seed plate are unique to this planter (single hopper) and common. If you Google " Cole single hopper seed plate" you will find most every plate you would ever need. Please note this is NOT a Cole 12MX single hopper planter so those plates will not fit. You see these planters used mainly by gardeners or users that have no need for larger multi. row planters.

The back side of the metal seed plate will be stamped with the Cole plate number (like another post mentioned) which will help you identify your exact plate part number.

Thanks for the information, I do have a 140 that I will be using it with.
I saw it is a NC Peanut 10 hole.
Plant in 1st Gear?
What color green should it be?

That looks like the Cole planter my Grandpa used on our allis chalmers model b for many years except we had a different hitch in it
It was a horse drawn model converted to use with the tractor
We planted all our sweet corn and field corn with it from the early 60's till the early 90's
The only reason we stopped using it was my dad bought a late model IH 140 and it came with a IH planter with the one point fast hitch already on it
I gave the old Cole to one of my buddies about 10 years ago and his dad rigged a hitch on it for there super A
They used it this spring to plant their corn with
Id say that makes them good dependable planters

We have a newer Cole planter we purchased for planting sweetcorn. The issue we have with ours is the ground needs to be somewhat firm but not to hard to get it to go in the ground. I would ride the three point and the misses would drive. It would plant doubles and triples, so I would try to knock the extra seeds off the plate. I did buy plates off the internet which are easy to find if you google it. And they are all stamped on the back. I do have a cross reference chart if that would help you out. For what they cost we went out and bought a 2 row deere with 7000 units and this made things much more simpler.
