Do you like the sound effects, of what my CaseIH 1660 sounds like, when I’m trying to start it?

The starter engages, turns the motor over, then, at the first firing of the diesel, the starter gear disengages from the flywheel too soon, is what I think is happening, and the motor stops turning, but the starter continues for a second or 2, until I release it. I keep trying and trying and the engine will start, but it’s a pain.

What do you think is the problem? What part in the starter do you think needs to be replaced, to make it not disengage too early? It’s the earlier IH engine

You need to replace the starter drive. The clutch in it is shot.

As posted, your starter drive needs replacing. Now if you have a vehicle that takes an older Brendix, what you are describing can be common. ( BTW, there IS a difference between a Bendix and the newer starter drive) . Get your starter serviced and sleep well.

Yep, my White 2-105 did that. It worked in warmer weather when it started after the first few turns, but when it had to crank longer, it would kick out as soon as the engine got the least little bit ahead of the starter. A new Bendix took care of it.

Sounds like you need a fuel filter.

if it spins slow i would do battery's first, if it spins fast the start itself. by what your say is what i would do but been wrong before.

OK, thank you. I will replace the starter drive. How hard is this to do? It looks like it's not too hard to take out the starter, I can get to it on the side of the engine. How hard is it to replace the starter drive, once I get the starter out?

The thing is you don’t just replace the drive. You check the bushings. The front bushing always wears more due to more pressure from the drive. Plus check the brushes. Plus a thorough clean up. Lube the bushings also and some light oil on the drive splines. Why do 1/2 a job. Plus there is a trick to get them brushes back on the armature. If you’re not confident then get a competent helper. Or take it to town for the job.
