Comparing Case 1470 to IH4166

I have never been around either one of these tractors, they look similar, Tractor data shows they are similar on paper. I was wondering how they compared in the field? Have a happy new year, Mike

Hmmmm, I have always wondered if the 4166 was a sound tough tractor like the 1470's. In the power department I would give the 14 top honors. Being a first generation 504 it was not perfect, but if operated properly they gave many trouble free hrs of operation and lets not forget that engine in the 14's set a record for fuel economy. Cab comfort was not something either could brag about, but I think there also the 14 was a notch up from the IH offering. Trans and final drive performance should be very similiar on the tractors. Just my thoughts, but then I operate a 1470 so it is natural for me to be a little Pro-Case, LOL. It is a simple basic no frills tractor that does what I ask it to and still has a little fun factor even though its basic's were designed nearly 50 yrs. ago, Rod.

IH had trans issues, everyone around here had them, also operators comfort is not like the CASE either, last ones I seen at sales brought 1000-1500 had they had good tires I would have bought them for that though

Just for fun you should ask the same question on the IH/Farmall board. I bet the responses aren't the same. IH 4100s were somewhat popular around here but then they tapered off with the next models and I only know of one 4166. I only know of one 1470 and its sitting a quarter mile from my house. There might have been a few more back in the day. I'll take a Steiger or Versatile over either one but I wouldn't mind a 1200 or 4100 for a collector either.

just for the record I am not putting them down I just am going off repairing tractors for the last 40 years I never worked on a engine in one of those but I have done a number of trans related issues I should have put that in my first post sorry, main things I have done on 1470's is axle/planetary seals (I have done IH ones as well), I did put new bearings in a customers 1470 but he had never changed the oil or clean the lube pump screen and that had let debris through and locked up the pump, he then removed it and run it without lube the trans did not like that,I do agree that their are other opinions just saying what I have seen

We had a 4166 for much of my youth. That 436 was a great engine. The transmissions were supposed to be a weak point if you pulled too big of implement with it(Spicer I think). We used it with a 10 shank chisel and it was fine. The steering wouldn't stay primed when parked overnight, and the 2-4 wheel drive lever had a tendency to shift itself to 2, which would cause the pinion to shed some teeth when pulled hard. Other than that, it was a good machine up until the oil drain plug came loose in the field.

As for construction, it was very similar to a 1470. You could argue on little points, but saying one was better than the other would be pretty tough.

Both 8 speed, both 150hp, both drive terrible on the road but ride like a couch in the field.

Thanks for the replies. There were a few 1466's around, from what I've heard if you treated them like a 150 hp tractor they were ok, if you tried to make a Steiger out of them, you had problems. I've never seen a 1470 in the flesh, from what I've heard here they sound like they were a pretty good tractor, it might be fun to have one or at least take one for a spin some time. Welcome to 2014! Mike

ENGINES--I like my Cases but have reluctantly concluded that the M and 400 series Farmall was the superior engine of their time. The first 6 cyl engines in the 460 and 560 seemed a little weak but when IH came out with the 466D design, they were back in the game in big way. Tractor pullers loved that engine much more so that the Case 70 series diesel.

CABS--The 70 series Case had better cabs than either IH or Deere during that era. IH closed the cab gap significantly with their 86 series. The IH 66 series cabs and the 4620 Deere Cabs were boom boxes. Deere eventually also closed the cab gap.

Kevin, they both used Clark axles/planetary's the 1470 used a Clark transmission as well, so yes they has construction heritage in them at least the Case did for sure as the 1200 the 1470 predecessor was in part designed around and by Case's loader team that had made the "W" series loaders
