Compression question

Having trouble with cold starting with my landlord 2110(10hp briggs)& an old timer told me if you can hold your thumb over the spark plug hole, it's not enough compression. Is this an old wives tale? If I can get a compression Guage, how many lbs should I have?

Does that one have the cast iron 10 hp. on it? Briggs and Stratton has had compression release of some kind on most of their engines since back in the '70s maybe even earlier. Because of the compression release design, I don't think they published any compression data.
